How do you feel about hacking hardware unlock codes?
Intel now ships processors which are field-upgradeable to activate hyper-threading or increase cache size. Some are angered that this is unfair and that Intel should enable all the capabilities in the chip you bought. I'm generally a supporter of the principle that you should be able to use a purchased item or technology in any way you like, up to and including disassembly and customization. In this case, however, I have to think twice. Chips are very expensive to build. Like any product, a range of capabilities are needed to meet different market needs from the low end to the high end. One way to do that (the traditional approach) is to design and manufacture a number of hardware variations. But what if a smaller number of variations can be built and then field-customized? Well, then costs come down and so do prices. So I think those up in arms about this should just get over it because the alternative they have is to get the same processors for a higher price.
